Controversial Horror 'Pig' To Be Screened At SXSW, But Never Again Anywhere

In the '50s and '60s, horror movie producer William Castle knew that, with the right marketing, a somewhat generic movie could be taken to the next level and garner attention in a way that would make it stand out from its competitors. From offering life insurance policies to audiences in case you died seeing his films to electronic buzzers activated by the events on-screen, Castle could create word-of-mouth that made a horror film an event instead of a typical screening. The filmmakers behind the controversial horror film PIG have taken a cue from Castle and are screening their film for the public two times this weekend before it's locked away for good.

Back in 2010, horror news site Bloody Disgusting screened the film online for anyone who dared to witness the deranged debacle from director Adam Mason. Shot for $3,000 and consisting mainly of one, improvised take, the film gain urban legend status for how unsettling and bizarre it was, thanks to Andrew Howard's lead performance. As you can see in the trailer above, this movie is not for the faint of heart.
When putting together the Midnight lineup for this year's SXSW Film Festival, programmer Jarod Neece asked Mason what he did with the film. Mason claimed that it was buried somewhere in his garage, causing Neece to offer the director one last chance to screen his mythical film.
The film's synopsis is as follows:
"A savage satire of gender politics in America, Adam Mason is guaranteed to shock and offend with PIG. Created with actor and long-time collaborator Andrew Howard, PIG is a virtuoso piece of pure cinema – with the vast majority of the film shot in a single, excruciating take. Less a narrative than a slice of madness – PIG pushes gender roles out to wild, lunatic extremes. Boasting a powerhouse performance from Howard in front of the camera and technically dazzling work from Mason behind it, PIG creates a truly uncomfortable sense of intimacy and has never been more relevant than in the chaotic time we live in now."
If you happen to live in Austin or will be attending this year's SXSW Film Festival, PIG looks like a film that isn't to be missed if you're a genre fan, if for no other reason to be one of the few who can say they've seen it in a theater.
