Golden Globe Nominations: 5 Biggest Film Snubs

The Golden Globe Award is an American accolade bestowed by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) recognizing excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign.

This years nominations for a Golden Globe Award in both film and television were announced very early this morning.

While there wasn’t much surprise in most of the film categories, other than Deadpool being nominated for best comedy – the first superhero movie to ever grace the Golden Globe stage, a few films, actors, and directors got the big snub.

Last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards are usually a pre-cursur to the rest of awards season, but a few of the winners from last night are completely missing from the Golden Globes roster.

Sorry, Tom Hanks.

Let’s breakdown the 5 biggest Golden Globe snubs in the film categories…

Sully

Sully, star Tom Hanks, and director Clint Eastwood were completely snubbed all the way around.

Sully did not recieve a best picture nomination in any category.

Tom Hanks (who won a Critics’ Choice award) did not receive a best actor nomination.

And finally Clint Eastwood did not receive a best director nom.

On Jan. 15, 2009, Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) tries to make an emergency landing in New York’s Hudson River after US Airways Flight 1549 strikes a flock of geese. Miraculously, all of the 155 passengers and crew survive the harrowing ordeal, and Sullenberger becomes a national hero in the eyes of the public and the media. Despite the accolades, the famed pilot now faces an investigation that threatens to destroy his career and reputation.

Sully is a 2016 American biographical drama film directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Todd Komarnicki, based on the autobiography Highest Duty by Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow. The film stars Tom Hanks as Sullenberger, with Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, Autumn Reeser, Holt McCallany, Jamey Sheridan, and Jerry Ferrara in supporting roles.

Silence

Silence, the high-profile from famed director Martin Scorcese was a bit of a late release, but still has award potential.

Silence was left of out every single category in the Golden Globe nominations, failing to earn a nomination for best picture, best director, or best actor.

This was quite shocking as pundits expected the film to be nominated for at least…something.

Silence is a 2016 American historical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Jay Cocks and Scorsese, based upon the 1966 novel of the same name by Shūsaku Endō. The film was shot entirely in Taipei, Taiwan and stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano, and Ciarán Hinds.

Arrival

Arrival was left out of the Best Picture categories, but Amy Adams was nominated for Best Actress and the score was nominated as all.

Having a nomination for Best Performance, but not Best Picture is a definite snub, considering just how brilliant the film is.

As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Arrival is a 2016 American science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, based on the short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang. It stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker.

Nocturnal Animals

Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals did land multiple nominations including Best Director and Best Screenplay, it was still left out of Best Picture in any category.

Stars Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal were also snubbed for their leading performances.

A successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner’s idyllic life is marred by the constant traveling of her handsome second husband. While he is away, she is shaken by the arrival of a manuscript written by her first husband, who she has not seen in years. The manuscript tells the story of a teacher who finds a trip with his family turning into a nightmare. As Susan reads the book, it forces her to examine her past and confront some dark truths.

Nocturnal Animals is a 2016 American neo-noir psychological thriller film written, co-produced and directed by Tom Ford, based on the 1993 novel Tony and Susan by Austin Wright. The film stars Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Isla Fisher, Armie Hammer, Laura Linney, Andrea Riseborough and Michael Sheen.

Fences

Fences scored two nominations, but was left out of the top categories.

Denzel Washington did score a nom for Best Actor, but not Best Director and the film itself did not get nominated for Best Picture in any category (like expected).
