“I’ve never seen anybody more prepared both physically and mentally than Tom. He’s tireless and unbelievably focused,” Director Edward Zwick said in a previous interview. “It’s a pretty boring job to be Tom’s stunt double. He did all of his own stunts. It’s almost a hallmark of what he does. He does every bit of it himself.”
Indeed, Cruise famously did his own stunts in last year’s Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, including a stunt where he actually hung from a real airplane’s doorway as it took off – a stunt revealed even in early promotional materials for that film.
The Jack Reacher sequel to the 2012 film, based once again on the Lee Child novel series, sees Cruise’s titular character helping Cobie Smulders, playing an Army major accused of spying break her case. She too “didn’t use a stunt double” Zwick said.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back hits theaters October 21, 2016.
