May of 2019 is hardly less than three years away but still has a stacked line-up of films already staking their claims on certain dates, including Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 and Disney’s Star Wars: Episode IX. It’s interesting to note than May 25, 2019 is a Saturday. It is also the day after Episode IX is set to be release. The last time Warner Brothers and Disney landed on the same date after Disney’s flag was already planted was with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War. Warner Brothers ended up moving their films release date up about six weeks to avoid unnecessary weekend competition.
The Minecraft movie is still in the early stages of construction but, so far, we know Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney is going to be sitting the director’s chair when production begins.
Minecraft follows the leads of several other hit video game franchises to make their way to the big screen, some of which were considerably more successful than others. However, the Minecraft movie will target a much younger audience than some of the more mature adaptations which limited their reach. Earlier this year, Warcraft debuted in theaters and succeeded massively overseas. Ending the year, Assassin’s Creed will hit the silver screen.
The Minecraft franchise has already branched out of the video game world. Collectibles and toys have been on sale for years. Entire lines of apparel are available based on characters and objects from the hit game. Even LEGO has unveiled a line of Minecraft building sets.
