John Hostetter who played the stage manager of the fictitious FYI news show depicted on CBS's sitcom, Murphy Brown, has passed away at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor died on Saturday Sept. 2, 2016, his family announced.

Though he is best known for his role as the calm and collected stage manager on the 1988-98 sitcom, he also appeared in numerous other television shows over the years, including Knight Rider, T.J. Hooker, Simon & Simon, The Golden Girls, Cagney & Lacey, Coach, Matlock, NYPD Blue and Sheena.

Hostetter was also known for his voice work on television. His voice can be heard in several TV series, including Spawn (1997) and The Transformers (1986). He also played the voice of Bazooka in G.I. Joe: The Movie (1987).

But Hostetter also had some acting roles in the 1990s. In 1991 he played Mills on the The Flash, and in 1998 he played a Bolian officer in Star Trek: Insurrection.

In addition to a career on the big and small screens, Hostetter was a musician who regularly performed in a local touring band.

He is survived by his wife.
