'Star Trek: Discovery' Premiere Leads To Record High CBS All Access Sign-Ups

Star Trek: Discovery is convincing Star Trek fans to boldly go where many have never gone before: to the CBS All Access subscription service.

The Star Trek: Discovery premiere led CBS All Access to reach a record high number of subscription sign-ups in a single day.

CBS did not release specific numbers, but the company claims that more new subscribers joined CBS All Access on Sunday than on the service's previous highest single-day subscription surge, which came right before the GRAMMY Awards in February.

Not only did CBS All Access reach a new single-day high for subscriptions, but it also saw subscribers pouring in at a record pace for a single week and single month due to the combined draw of Star Trek: Discovery, the return of the NFL on CBS, and the season finale of Big Brother and Big Brother Live Feeds.

The first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars," both began streaming on CBS All Access last night. "The Vulcan Hello" also aired on CBS in an attempt to draw new users to All Access. The episodes have been met with mostly positive reviews.

CBS All Access also debuted After Trek, a new livestreaming Star Trek: Discovery aftershow. The show is hosted by Matt Mira of the Nerdist and Star Trek: The Next Conversation podcasts. His inaugural guests were Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green, co-star James Frain, and co-showrunner Aaron Harberts.

Star Trek: Discovery is the second scripted original series to be featured on CBS All Access, following The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight, which debuted earlier in 2017. CBS is planning to add more original series to the service, possibly including additional Star Trek series. Star Trek: Discovery is the first new Star Trek television series in over a decade. The franchise went off the air with the conclusion of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005.

Star Trek has since been kept alive in movie theaters through the reboot film series launched in 2009, which takes place in an alternate timeline. Discovery marks the return to the prime timeline of Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the rest of the Star Trek canon.

New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery debut on CBS All Access Sundays at 8:30 pm ET.
