A new video teaser released by CBS reveals the first four episode titles of the series, beginning with series premiere “The Vulcan Hello.” As previously noted, “The Vulcan Hello” seems like a reference to Discovery’s lead character, Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). Burnham was raised by Sarek, Spock’s father, on the planet Vulcan after her parents were killed during a Klingon attack while the family was visiting the Vulcan Learning Center. Star Trek: Discovery is said to deal heavily with the duality of Burnham’s human nature and Vulcan upbringing.
The title of the second episode is “Battle of the Binary Stars,” which seems likely to be a reference to the conflict that kicks off the war between the Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. The trailer for Star Trek: Discovery heavily suggested that Burnham would play a major role in starting that war.
Star Trek: Discovery’s third episode gets a bit philosophical with the title “Context is for Kings.” It is worth noting that neither the Federation nor the Klingon Empire is ruled by a king (Klingons are ruled by a Chancellor), but Chris Obi – the actor who plays T’Kuvma, leader of House T’Kuvma – was once referred by executive producer Aaron Harbarts as “King of the Klingons.” Perhaps this is a hint towards T’Kuvma’s ambitions?
Lastly, the show’s fourth episode will be titled “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not For the Lamb’s Cry.” That title is difficult to decipher. Lambs are often used in religious imagery, and religion is said to be a factor in the Klingon aspect of Discovery’s story, which is particularly interesting since the gods of the Klingons have previously been referred to as dead gods, slain by heroic Klingons.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres September 24, 2017. For more information on how to watch, check out our viewing guide.0comments
