First Look at Mon Mothma on Star Wars Rebels

Since Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, we’ve known Mon Mothma as a, if not the, leader of the Rebel Alliance. The stately woman with bright red hair and an impressively calm temperament delivers orders and news good and bad usually with the same demeanor. Mon Mothma almost appeared in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, but was cut from the film; however, the same actress cast for that younger version of her, Genevieve O’Reilly (the spitting image of original actress Caroline Blakiston), would go on to portray the character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Mon Mothma also appeared on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, planting the seeds that her leadership was both strong and would be needed in the future.

In Rogue One, we saw a composed, but not quite in-control Mon Mothma. It looks like on Star Wars Rebels we’ll see something close to that; the show takes place a few years ahead of the events in the film, after all. In the trailer, she talks of building an alliance and says, “This is our Rebellion.” The character is clearly the impetus toward bringing the smaller Rebel cells together as a true Rebel Alliance, something Bail Organa (who also returned in the trailer) and others have also been working toward.

The extra bit of intrigue in having Mon Mothma on this season of Star Wars Rebels, aside from simply getting to see the broader Alliance be formed, comes two-fold. One, it appears there’s an attempt to free Lothal, long under the Empire’s boot, and the Imperials speak of a “coordinated attack” in the trailer. Two, Mon Mothma and the Rebel Alliance have a clear, spoken of history with Saw Gerrera and his unconventional methods. Could we see the two of them actually experience that history on Rebels after it being talked about in Rogue One? The connections from Rebels to the films are growing ever stronger as it approaches the same timeframe, after all.
