Sticking to tradition of third trailers being mostly remixed mashes of previously seen footage, the majority of the latest international trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is not news to audiences.
This particular footage, however, gives more that most.
In the just-over two minute piece, it looks like the shots are positioned differently for the test shot on Jedha. Also, the Lucasfilm folks have been saying for months that the casual, fun, give-and-take of longtime friends Chirrut and Baze would be a part of the film, but this is the first time that fans have gotten to truly hear or see it ourselves. Baze is skeptical of the Force, while Chirrut is a devotee, so that relationship should help the audience better understand mysticism and religion in this world.
As this is an international trailer that was originally released in Korea, the focus on Asian actors makes sense as Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen, respectively, were highlighted in the footage.
The battle scene has new, extended dogfight images and the very ending of the trailer is new to fans. As is the result of the rocket shot at the AT-AT in the last trailer where it topples over in the third cut.
What was not given was more Darth Vader footage as it has been limited and guarded through this entire ramp up to the movie.
This is the second international release of the day, as Clip No. 3 "Hero," was also published this morning. It has new images as well and can be seen by clicking here.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star.
The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
