The most relatable aspect of actors, writers, and directors making Star Wars movies today is when they talk about growing up with the franchise. Now that we’re in a true second, if not third real generation of Star Wars films, the people in them and making them are fans who grew up with the original trilogy, too.

“This character, this story, I grew up with. It’s like I’ve been preparing my whole life for this,” said actor Diego Luna in a new behind-the-scenes featurette released by Lucasfilm Monday. The actor, who plays one of the leads Captain Cassian Andor of the Rebel Alliance, echoes statements made by directer Gareth Edwards and others associated with the film with that statement, as many have mentioned the specific and unique thrill of seeing the interior of the Death Star, climbing into an X-wing, or putting on the classic Rebel pilot suit for the first time; not to mention seeing Darth Vader’s intimidating frame walk onto the set.
“It’s challenging because one day you’re doing a very emotional scene and the next day you’re beating up some stormtroopers,” he said of filming a Star Wars movie. “It’s fun. It has a little bit of everything.”
The balance of action and introspection is something the marketing campaign has been centered around of late, with equal parts big dog fights or hand-to-hand combat and conversations with inspiring speeches and message of hope.
Luna said shooting the film is “a true adventure, you’re enjoying the ride in a galaxy far, far away.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it’s the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core “Skywalker Saga” of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue Onetells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: “Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.”
