Star Wars Episode IX Will Bring Back Carrie Fisher Without CGI

After the sad passing of Carrie Fisher late last year, fans have been wondering what the studio’s plans were for the character of Leia, who had a substantial role in 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Fisher’s brother Todd Fisher has now revealed what will happen going forward for Star Wars: Episode IX.

In an interview with Confidential (via New York Daily News), Fisher said his sister will make an appearance in the final film of the new Star Wars trilogy. “Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t. She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi-Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue.”

Fisher, as well as Carrie’s daughter Billie Lourd, both gave the studio approval to use recent footage for the upcoming film, though CGI will also play a big part. “I’m not the only part in that equation, but I think the people deserve to have her,” said Fisher. “She’s owned by them. You don’t mess with this legacy. It would be like rewriting the Bible. To me, Star Wars is the holy grail of storytelling and lore and you can’t mess with it.”

Fisher also spoke of a future project that involves work he and Carrie did in the past. “Carrie and I grew up with a magical life, we really did, and there are a lot of stories to tell. Carrie and I actually wrote some things together. It’s very likely that I’ll get to those now sooner than I would have normally because we didn’t think the stories were going to end. Now that they’ve ended, the stories probably should be told. So there’s some magic left in us and there are a lot of Carrie’s words left unspoken that will be spoken.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017, release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong’o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is slated for release on December 15, 2017.
