The Star Wars actor isn’t afraid to reveal his opinions about the saga that made him a household name, though he rarely has anything negative or critical to say about the franchise. But he does have misgivings about George Lucas’ prequel trilogy and its use of a certain horned Sith Lord.
“Darth Maul was just the coolest looking,” Hamill said to reporters at Disney’s D23 Expo. “I couldn’t believe they disposed of him so quickly. I thought he would last through all three movies!”
Hamill’s comments might anger some Star Wars fans who watched the character’s arc through both the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series. But the character’s fate was essentially sealed in the films when Obi-Wan Kenobi cut him in half in The Phantom Menace.

Dave Filoni revived the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where Maul’s thirst for revenge against Kenobi kept him alive. He then went on to manipulate Ezra Bridger in Star Wars Rebels before finally facing Obi-Wan in a final duel. That one lasted only a second as the Jedi-in-hiding swiftly and decisively cut him down with a single blow โ it was one of the best moments of the animated series.
But Maul’s presence was sorely missed as he was essentially replaced by the much less intriguing Count Dooku.
