Carrie Fisher — the 60-year-old actress best known for portraying Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy — passed away on Tuesday after suffering a massive heart attack four days earlier on a London-to-Los Angeles flight. It was tremendous loss, but before it could be fully-absorbed, Fisher’s 84-year-old mother, Hollywood icon Debbie Reynolds, passed away the next day after suffering a possible stroke.

While many of us never had the pleasure of personally knowing either of them, we can always appreciate their immense talents by watching Reynolds dance up a storm with Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain and Fisher mow down stormtroopers in Star Wars.

It also helps when people like Mark Hamill, who spent time with both of them, shares memories that offers us a different perspective on who Fisher and Reynolds were when the cameras weren’t rolling.

“They were both really mothering types, both opinionated and determined,” Hamill told EW. “Carrie’s mom was like everybody’s mom. If you were in her house, Debbie was your mother. She gave you advice, and fixed your collar, and said, ‘Why did you wear a brown belt with black shoes?’

“In many ways, Debbie was the optimist,” he continued. “She has a spring in her step and is really upbeat and has all the qualities you associate with her, and Carrie would be shuffling around in a bathrobe and slippers muttering under her breath. So cynical! It was a real Felix-and-Oscar disparity between their personalities, and yet in many, many ways they were alike. She was fiercely protective of her mother and her mother’s legacy.”
