Future Star Wars Release Dates To Get Excited About

Hot on the heels of today’s announcement of the final film in the current Star Wars Trilogy, we have at least two full years of Star Wars things to look forward to.

Although Lucasfilm and Disney are shifting their film’s release dates to May after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the date change moves the film release closer rather than further away, meaning we’ll actually get two Star Wars movies within a five month span.

And outside of the movies, there is plenty of more to look forward to when it comes to TV shows, novels, comics, and video games.

Star Wars has maintained a memorable presence in tertiary media ever since the original movie came out 40 years ago. And Lucasfilm is continuing to churn out exciting new products and stories for fans to enjoy.

Whether you’re looking forward to play through the dangerous campaigns of the Inferno Squad or find out how Han Solo became an infamous smuggler, there are plenty of projects coming through the pipeline to keep you satisfied until the latest Star Wars Trilogy wraps up in the summer of 2019.

Plus, we’re expecting to hear about even more forthcoming stories in the Star Wars Universe announced at this summer’s D23 and San Diego Comic-Con.

But until then, here are some of the projects that we are most excited for in the order of their release dates.

Rebels Season 4 – Fall

So, we’re not exactly sure when exactly the latest season of Star Wars Rebels will begin airing on Disney XD, but based on our viewing experience at Star Wars Celebration we just had to put it on the list.

The show typically begins airing in the fall (except for Season 2 which premiered in June, 2015), and with the cast and crew already hard at work on the show’s production we’re sure this year will be very similar.

Filoni and the Storygroup are likely cooking up a fitting end to the storylines they began with the latest Star Wars animated series, while also touching on some of the most memorable moments and characters from The Clone Wars.

Star Wars Rebels should end it’s fourth season in a high note as it has steadily become one of the most incredible offerings in the Star Wars Universe, and a fitting heir to the series that came before it.

We cannot wait to see what Filoni and Co. cook up for their next animated outing in A Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Force Friday II – September 1

star wars force friday 2 september 1 2017

There’s a lot to be looking forward to when Lucasfilm drops their latest round of Star Wars merchandise this September.

The first Force Friday brought collectors out in droves as everyone gathered what new products they could find on the shelves.

Whether it was the BB-8 Spheros, Rey action figures, or brand new LEGO setsโ€”everything offered a small glimpse into the new future of the Star Wars Universe and what fans could expect on the big screen.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s first trailer was barely released, but we can already see some new designs that are bound to make the First Friday cut as action figures, models, and everything else in between.

Hopefully we get those new First Order Walkers, the Resistance land speeders, as well as new versions of Rey, Poe, Finn, Kylo Ren, and of course Luke Skywalker to contribute to our collections.

Battlefront II – November 17

Though fans flocked to the new DICE-developed Star Wars Battlefront when EA released it in 2015, there was a slight disappointment by the lack of a single-player campaign.

Sure, many gamers were satisfied by the Battlefield developer’s strong and significant multiplayer portion, but many people would have loved to dive into a full-fledged storyline that takes them through the different vast corners in the Star Wars Universe.

The company delivered with Star Wars Battlefront II, offering fans a unique look at the war between the Rebels and the Empireโ€”then the Resistance and the First Orderโ€”through the eyes of the Inferno Squad.

It looks to be a meaty and substantial single-player experience meant to go hand in hand with the beefy new multiplayer modes.

Hopefully DICE’s second foray into Star Wars video games proves more successful than the first, giving their user base more and more support years after the game releases in stores.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi – December 15

We know you’re excited for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

After that jaw-dropping teaser trailer, who on the face of this planet wouldn’t be?

The battle between the First Order and the Resistance is sure to intensify when the film releases at the end of this year, and Luke Skywalker finally enters the fray.

We’ve caught glimpses of the Jedi training his not-a-Padawan Rey NoLastName, imploring to her that the time of the Jedi is nigh. But what does it all mean? And how will Kylo Ren react? Will Luke put him in time out for hurting his daddy?

There are so many questions that we hope get answered when Rian Johnston’s installment in the series finally releases in theaters. We can’t wait to see what direction the latest Star Wars film will take the franchise in.

Untitled Han Solo Film – May 25, 2018

Ever since Han Solo took that fatal plunge toward the Starkiller’s reactor with a lightsaber-sized hole in his chest, we’ve been pretty sad.

It would have been pretty cool to see the smuggler mix it up with his old pal Luke Skywalker yet again on the screen during Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But Lucasfilm made up for the beloved character’s death with the announcement of the Han Solo spinoff movie.

We’ll get to see the smuggler become an infamous smuggler as he and his BFF Chewbacca pilot the Millennium Falcon yet again.

The cast is pretty impressive as it is, with Woody Harrelson signing on as his mentor while Thandie Newton and Emilia Clarke join the production in yet-to-be-disclosed roles. But we got really excited about the movie when we learned that Childish Gambino himself, Donald Glover, would be joining the film as Lando Calrissian.

The second Star Wars story/spinoff/anthology movie seems to be getting better the more we hear about it, but it might still be hard to get over seeing someone other than Harrison Ford playing the character.

Good luck, Alden Ehrenreich!

Star Wars: Episode IX – May 24, 2019

There’s not much known about this film except that Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow is directing, that a lot had to be rewritten in the wake of Carrie Fisher’s death, and that it is meant to cap off the trilogy of stories for Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren that began in the Force Awakens.

Disney just barely locked in the release date, making this the first saga film to release in May since Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

Getting another Star Wars saga film so close to the release date of a previous entry is pretty exciting, and we can’t wait to learn more in the coming year. Check out the news below to see what else we’ve found, and be sure to rate your excitement in the Anticipation Rankings below!
