Star Wars vs. Star Trek Danceoff Breaks Out At Baseball Game

Dating back to the ’70s, one of the biggest rivalries in all of science fiction has been the debate over the better franchise, Star Wars or Star Trek. Instead of using their words to argue the pros and cons of what each franchise had to offer, two groups of cosplayers settled the dispute the old school way by having a dance battle, which you can watch below.

The showdown took place at a minor league baseball game with the Fresno Grizzlies hosting their annual Star Wars night. Members of Starfleet clearly felt it was an insult to have a Star Wars night without also having a Star Trek night, as they stepped in to seek representation.

The battle was rough, with Geordie showing off his best Michael Jackson-inspired moves, but when a Jedi in khakis steps in to show off his breakdancing moves, the crowd decided that this battle was won by the galaxy far, far away.

This altercation left both sides with far fewer casualties than we’ve seen them suffer in their own respective franchises but is far from the first time we’ve seen them show off their groovier side.

The Star Wars films are known for the iconic orchestral arrangements that John Williams provided, but it was a hard-fought battle for George Lucas to convince the studio to go with the classical sound. Initially, the studio pushed Lucas towards using a more disco-inspired soundtrack, as the mid-’70s made it the most popular music at the time. Looking back, we can all agree that the classical music gives a timeless quality to the saga and wouldn’t have aged quite as well with trendy music.

Much like Star Wars almost catering to musical trends, the original Star Trek TV series aired in the ’60s, which would often embrace the campier elements of TV at the time and feature Captain Kirk (William Shatner) using his rhythm to seduce female aliens of multiple varieties.

Although we doubt we’ll see Kylo Ren shake his stuff in a face-off with Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we did get to see a funky sequence in The Force Awakens in 2015 when our heroes paid a visit to Maz Khanata’s. To pay homage to the musical Mos Eisley scene from the first film, which featured a performance by Figrin D’An and the Modal Nodes, J.J. Abrams tapped Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda to generate a song to honor the saga’s funky roots.
