After quite a bit of waiting, Lucasfilm is set to continue the Skywalker saga in December with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But in the meantime until the film’s release, fans are doing quite a bit of speculating about the snippets of information already shown in the first trailer. And one rumor suggests that a few certain artifacts – and their potential owner – could give a significant indication about the film’s plot.

MakingStarWars.net has reported alleged details about the gear that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) carries throughout the film. According to the site’s editor-in-chief, Jason Ward, this gear includes a compass, a backpack (which reportedly resembles the X-Wing-inspired backpacks available online), and a sort of walking stick/cattle prod.

The compass is particularly of note, as Ward suggests that it could play a hand in Luke’s journey – especially a physical one – within the film. Considering the fact that Luke has been on Ahch-To for presumably a long stretch of time, his utilization of a compass suggests a journey off-planet.

“I looked at the compass” Ward explains, “and I had to ponder if it is just another tool in the bag or is it special? Does it take Luke Skywalker to where he needs to go in The Last Jedi? Or does he find it at the end and that journey is conducted over the next film after The Last Jedi?”

Aside from this potential plot detail, Ward says that the compass is intricately designed, suggesting that it is Jedi in nature.

“The compass is a box with a blue marble-like orb on the top. I believe Luke Skywalker moves his hand over the blue orb and the box opens up to reveal the compass inside the box. The interior of the box has metallic dials with Aurebesh writing inside denoting some “space” version of North, South, East, and West with a needle to point the way. The prop is probably the most beautiful piece of craftsmanship I can think of for a Star Wars film.”

The backpack and walking stick seem to have significance too, according to Ward. The orange backpack reportedly has a net and kindling strapped to the back, while the prod is described as “something you would casually zap a pest with” and is allegedly held on Luke’s belt where a lightsaber would usually be.

As of right now, these prop descriptions are still rumors. But if they do prove to be true, they indicate a lot about Luke’s life since he has entered his exile, as well as where he could go in the saga’s next two installments.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017, release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong’o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is slated for release on December 15, 2017. Han Solo: A Star Wars Story hits on May 25, 2018, while Star Wars: Episode IX has a release date of May 24, 2019.
