The Force Awakens revealed to audiences the heritage of the new villain terrorizing the galaxy, with Kylo Ren being the son of Han and Leia who went down the wrong path, but the film never explained the connection he had, if any, to other heroes in the film. Considering Rey’s parents were never revealed, is it possible that she and Kylo had a genetic connection to one another?

When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson explained that the two characters represent “two halves of the dark and the light.”

Taking this comment into account, in addition to their skills with the Force, does this confirm a familial connection?

One theory about Rey’s parents is that her dad is Luke Skywalker, which would make her a cousin to Kylo, potentially teasing that one of Anakin Skywalker’s grandchildren went to the dark side while the other went to the light.

We’ve seen opposing forces within a family before, with Luke taking on his father as a symbol of good while Darth Vader was a force of evil.

It’s also possible, of course, that there’s no genetic connection, and both Kylo and Rey are merely symbolic representations of light and dark.

We’re sure to find out more answers when The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.
