When Eugene and Abraham met, Eugene told Big Red that he was a scientist equipped with the knowledge and skills required to diffuse the zombie apocalypse. When Negan stepped in and killed Abraham right before Eugene’s eyes, it wasn’t long until Eugene became a hostage of the villain before ultimately becoming one of his highest ranking soldiers.
Eugene quickly uttered the words, “I’m Negan,” upon request, betraying everything his protector Abraham stood and died for.
At Walker Stalker Con over the weekend, Eugene and Abraham actors Josh McDermitt and Michael Cudlitz were asked by fans what Abraham would think of the dark turn Eugene has take in recent episodes of the AMC series.

“I think Abraham would not be surprised by it but honestly, if Abraham was still there, Eugene would still be with Abraham,” McDermitt said. “That’s the dynamic and the relationship that the two of them had, that Abraham protected Eugene, and now Eugene is seeking protection elsewhere.”
Then Cudlitz chimed in, ready to correct McDermitt’s thoughts saying, “Let’s ask Abraham…”
“I think he’s being very, very true to character,” Cudlitz admits. “This is exactly the guy I punched in the face at the fire truck. He’s staying alive. Especially if somebody he’s looking for me in protection, and he sees the person that he felt could protect him from anything gets killed ,what the hell kind of chance does he think he stands in his own head? He’s gonna say no? He’s gonna defy them? He’s gonna somehow beat Negan? He may ultimately poison their entire food supply and kill them all but not today! He’s staying alive!”
All hope of redemption for Eugene aside, Cudlitz sums up Abraham’s perspective of the new Eugene in one sentence. “If Abraham was able to step back and look at it, he would say he’s not surprised at all and he would expect it and he’s being completely true to character,” Cudlitz said.
