The Walking Dead realized an iconic comic book moment in its Something They Need episode on Sunday night. During Sasha’s captivity, David crept into the cell and attempted to rape her. The move didn’t end well for the creep, however. Negan bust into the room, Lucille and a gigantic knife in hand, reminding David that the Saviors follow and strict “no rape” policy.

ComicBook.com caught up with David actor Martinez to hear his perspective of realizing such an iconic scene in AMC‘s live action take on the comics. As it turns out, the actor was thrilled despite being finished with the show, as a result.

“I had done some research once I was initially cast and saw what the storyline for David was,” Martinez said. “I had been excited for a really long time to shoot that scene.”

The terrifying scene which saw a huge knife slicing through David’s neck was pulled straight from the comics. It was a bit tricky for the production team to pull off. “We shot a lot of different takes,” Martinez said. “A lot of CGI. A lot of different prop knives going in and out. Lots of laying in pools of blood, just sticky pools of blood that were literally just pulling the hair out of my head.”

Replicating the comic was the top priority.

“One of the things that the producers were really, really cognisant of was really trying to match, frame for frame, the sequence of events from the comic,” Martinez said. “We even had a special day of fitting for the costumes, making sure the costumes were exactly what you saw in the comic book, all the prosthetics. I had a whole extra day of prosthetics for the knife stabbing me in the head and the other prosthetic for the stab wounds in the throat. It was just incredible, man. It was like being a kid in Disneyland.”

Martinez interview took place live on ComicBook.com’s The Walking Dead recap show, After the Dead.
