When Fear the Walking Dead began, none of its characters were equipped to survive in the world of its older sibling series The Walking Dead. They should consider themselves lucky the producers and writers have no plans for a crossover.

Fear began in the earliest hours of the end of the world when the walker virus was freshly beginning to break out. Meanwhile, Rick Grimes was on his way to a coma on the East Coast. However, when Rick woke up to find the world completely overrun by the undead, his pre-apocalyptic profession offered the skils to protect himself and those around him.
On Fear the Walking Dead, the main characters were teachers, students, drug addicts and con artists. None of these roles were exactly forming the west coast bunch into an ideal bunch of survivors.
After all, they can’t all be Tobias and get a grip on what’s coming by actually believing what they see on the news.
Some of the characters have quickly adapted to the perils presented to them by this apocalyptic world, forming them into hardened survivors willing to do what is necessary.
In preparation for Fear the Walking Dead’s Season 3 premiere on June 4, let’s take a look at the five characters best suited for survival in the world of The Walking Dead.
Travis
In the early days of the apocalypse, Travis was the opposite of a skilled survivor. The high school teacher was anything but ready for the dead to rise. He actively avoided dealing with the threats presented by the apocalypse.
With the death of his son, everything changed for Travis.
In the final episodes of Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead, Travis snapped. He dropped his attempts at morality in favor of revenge. Locked in a room with the two boys responsible for Chris’ death, Travis literally beat them to death and accidentally killed a man trying to stop him. It was a fierce show a Travis’ ruthless ability just weeks after he was refusing to put down a walker.
The Travis of old would try to reason with someone like Negan but the new and improved (in terms of the apocalypse) Travis woouldn’t put up with the oppression. He would be quick to try and kill the villain and while it might cost him, it’s an idea fans could get behind.ย
Luciana
Introduced in Fear the Walking Dead‘s second season, Luciana was equipped with the skills to survive from the moment we met her.ย
Serving as a leader of sorts in La Colonia, Luciana often dispatched undead threats and confidently handled the looming threat of the Cartels. However, for Luciana, it wasn’t about fighting and killing the Cartels right away. She wisely showed patience, despite her community being oppressed by the gang members nearby.
When Nick showed up and the community’s plans were derailed, Luciana was still ready to fight when necessary and had the skill to do so. Not to mention, she has always been quick to cover herself in the blood of the dead in order to blend in.
Comparing Luciana to The Walking Dead, she seems to be a close reflection of Sasha or even Abraham. She’s a valuable and selfless soldier.ย
Nick
Like Luciana, Nick was quick to discover the benefits of covering himself with walker guts. He, however, has learned much more than that since the world fell apart.
In the earliest days of the apocalypse, Nick was a drug addict. After some difficult attempts to kick his habit, the character emerged successful in his efforts and ready to survive. Nick is eager to protect his family and new girlfriend Luciana. He is quick to strip the moral questions of whether or not certain survival methods are acceptable and would fair well beside Rick Grimes and company.
Nick often thinks more logically than the people around him, which is a very valuable asset in the world of the Dead. He would quickly climb the leadership ranks within the Alexandria Safe-Zone’s community of survivors and remain vigilante to the communities surrounding it.
Ofelia
Like every character, Ofelia began her time on Fear the Walking Dead as a defenseless person lucky to make it as far as she did.ย
Following the losses of her mother and father, Ofelia evolved. At one point, Ofelia was whipping a hammer into the heads of walkers and trotting around on the desolate streets of Tijuana on her own. Such hasteful moves can prove risky but when you’re equipped with the physical and mental ability to dispatch threats, you’re cut out for the world of the Dead.ย
Heading into a war with Negan, Ofelia would serve as a valuable ally to Rick Grimes. Like the other characters on this list, she is willing to do what is necessary. To top that off, she has something in common with Travis: nothing to lose.ย
Strand
Then, there’s Victor Strand.
We haven’t seen this character get his hands too dirty just yet but he is comparable to the Eugene Porters of the world. Eugene has survived on his ability to blend in. He is willing to lie to earn protection. It has taken him a long way, despite fans currently hating him for aligning himself with Negan.
Victor Strand is no different. This man’s best weapon is his tongue. He can adapt to any situation by reading the room and saying the right words to add value to himself. He conned a man into thinking he loved him, he got Nick and himself out of their holding in Los Angeles, and will continue to talk his way out of danger in Fear the Walking Dead Season 3. Such a tool would prove valuable in the Alexandria Safe-Zone.
