Epic Ways For Fear And The Walking Dead Crossover To Go Down

Last week, many agreed with an piece here on ComicBook.com’s The Walking Dead corner which explained why Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead cannot and should not crossover.

On the contrary, however, there are a few ways for the two AMC zombie shows to cross paths which should get everyone excited. The best part of this is that, in some cases, we get more of Rick Grimes’ journey if his group is appearing on Fear the Walking Dead during The Walking Dead‘s off-season.

The first and most common wish for a connection between the two shows is that Fear the Walking Dead is telling the origin story of the Whisperers. In Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comics, the group which Rick takes on in the aftermath of Negan is called the Whisperers. It’s a savage bunch which wears the skin of the dead in an effort to go unnoticed while venturing through the apocalyptic world, constantly keeping their voices to a whisper.

Early on in Fear the Walking Dead, characters like Nick Clark and Luciana adopted the covering-yourself-in-zombie-guts method of safely exploring the world outside of the comfort of their community’s walls. In fact, Nick was embracing the method far before Rick Grimes or any other character in the Dead world took it on.

As the method became more and more popular, the theories of Nick eventually covering himself completely in zombie skin and walking among them all day, every day, became more and more popular. Many are hoping to one day see Nick or Madison pull a skin-mask off on The Walking Dead to reveal themselves as Whisperer characters Beta and/or Alpha.

Fulfillment of this theory would instantly turn Fear the Walking Dead into must-watch television as the story becomes the origin of the Whisperers leading to the crossover which will have aired before Madison and company arrive near Alexandria. However, peeling back the excitement for a moment, this is the least likely crossover to be realized because it would require cast members and several others involved with both series to work many more months out of the year. It would, actually, require more than twelve months of work in a year to be able to film complete seasons of both Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead.

This is why the next few theories are more likely…

Morales Returns

In The Walking Dead‘s first season, a character by the name of Morales took his two kids and wife and left Georgia rather than continuing along Rick’s journey the CDC in Atlanta. His name was Morales.

The character played by Juan G. Pareja was never seen or heard from again.

While this would not be the crossover fans of The Walking Dead were necessarily hoping for when Fear the Walking Dead was announced, it would be enough to make longtime fans of the zombie world living on AMC lose their minds with excitement. 

Morales had set a course for Birmingham, Alabama when he departed The Walking Dead. It’s a destination southwest of Atlanta and somewhat in the direction of Mexico if he were to overshoot it by a few thousand miles or be forced to continue his journey south, for any reason. After all, it is the apocalypse, and it’s unlikely he found his family as safe and sound as he was hoping to.

Furthermore, Morales would not have to be some sort of hardened survivor to arrive on Fear the Walking Dead. As Fear stands now, Rick Grimes has only been awake for a few weeks, at most. It’s likely getting close to, if not already at, the point where Morales heads south on his own. 

“Hi, I’m Madison,” Madison says. “You look like you’ve come a long way. Are you alone?”

“I wasn’t… Before,” Morales says, covered in the dirt and guilt from surviving his journey. “I am now.”

Family Ties

Last week’s Teotwawki of Fear the Walking Dead prompted an interesting conversation among fans. When Madison actor Kim Dickens spoke with a southern accent, many began wondering where it came from.

These fans are forgetting a key trait about Madison. Although she was introduced to the series as a guidance counselor living in Los Angeles, California, she was born and raised in Alabama.

Most fans of Fear the Walking Dead found it by originally being fans of The Walking Dead, which means most of the audience put together that she is the only character to have revealed a connection to the southeastern part of the country where The Walking Dead takes place.

Naturally, when any sort of connection can be made between two series which exist in the same universe, fans begin speculating and theorizing regarding connections. The most popular: Could Madison be related to a character on The Walking Dead? After all, it was only recently revealed that Rick Grimes has a long lost brother…

There was initially a thought of Madison being the sister of Rick Grimes. In The Walking Dead comics, Rick has a brother Jeff who was mentioned very early on in the series and apparently forgotten by big Sheriff brother but not the writers. Earlier this year, a one-shot comic book was released called The Walking Dead: The Alien which followed Jeff Grimes on a journey through Barcelona while the zombie outbreak was fresh. Just as he set sail for the U.S., he revealed himself to be the brother of protagonist Rick Grimes but likely never found big bro seeing as he was bleeding out due to walker bite.

Madison’s name would have likely been changed for her first marriage which is why she is no longer going by Madison Grimes. The biggest question, which will apply to all of the theories, is why Rick never mentioned his sister out in California or and likewise for Madison’s lack of interest in connecting with her brother, a cop who may have had answers about what’s going on.

The next possibility would be Lori Grimes, who seems much more feasible. Lori hardly asked questions about her husband who was in a nearby hospital when the world went down so her sister from across the country would probably be an afterthought. Very little of Lori’s past was revealed to the audience, so it is entirely possible that the two characters grew up together in Alabama. Of course, it would be an interesting (however unnecessary) connection between the two shows seeing as Lori has been dead for some time now and Madison will never be able to pull off a family reunion.

All things considered, Madison could be related to a number of other characters from The Walking Dead. The Dixon brothers, Carol, or even Andrea. 

The most likely scenario, however, is that Madison encountered or passed by the characters at some point in their pre-apocalyptic lives before she moved to Los Angeles. It’s a small world, after all.

Stray Possibilities

In the world of The Walking Dead shows, characters are constantly in motion and seeking sanctuary. 

The two shows won’t likely intersect, ever, especially with main characters, but a nod to the existence of each other would be more than enough to satisfy crossover hungry fans.

There was already the missed opportunity of seeing a line go across the bottom of the screen during a newscast when Fear the Walking Dead’s characters still had cable which read, “Georgia Office In Critical Condition After Suffering Gunshot Wound.” 

Something this tiny would be a welcome addition to Fear or The Walking Dead‘s story. The Fear characters may have found a home in Season 3 with Broke Jaw Ranch appearing to be the shelter they needed but, should that location fall like most others do in this world, they may journey north seeing as Mexico was certainly not what they needed. What if they hand to Atlanta or the surrounding areas and discover the remains of Terminus? The hospital and Dawn’s squad? 

As unlikely the possibilities are, they are also endless.
