With all the excitement surrounding the launch of The Walking Dead‘s season 7 trailer, it was easy to miss some of what it had packed in there. Maybe the tiger’s first appearance made you scream so loud you didn’t notice the fine details or maybe you were looking too hard for clues as to who it was that Negan killed.

Either way, Greg Nicotero has got you covered. The Walking Dead‘s executive producer offered up some insider info as to what was going on in that epic season 7 trailer.

Let’s take a look.

The Sanctuary

“When they’re removing the bucket from the walker chained near the fence in the second shot of the trailer, clearly we’re outside of the Sanctuary,” Nicotero says. “Fans who know the comic books will know that part of the defense of the Sanctuary is that they chain walkersโ€ฆย there’s a wooden spike there and you definitely get the sense that we’re outside of the Sanctuary where zombie body parts are spiked and slashed and chained to the fence as a defense and a deterrent.”

The Sanctuary is the iconic home to Negan seen in The Walking Dead comics. The set was built in the same location as season 3’s prison in Senoia, Georgia and will likely be explored thoroughly throughout season 7.

Carol

“I think the thing you’d notice about Carol is she still has the burn on the side of her face and she still has the gunshot wound in her arm,” Nicotero says. “So, she has yet to arrive somewhere where she has been tended to.”

We see Carol in the trailer later, having been introduced to Ezekiel but quite puzzled as to what is going on, but looking healthier. “You’ll probably notice in the later shot of Carol that her bandage is changed,” Nicoteroย says.

Morgan & Ezekiel

ย

It looks like Morgan and Ezekiel will be going on some staff-wielding adventures in season 7.

“In the close-up when the zombie appears at the window of the car, you can see Ezekiel and Morgan in the background,” Nicoteroย claims.

This one slipped by me but if Nicoteroย says it, it has to be true! Morgan and Ezekiel seem to be venturing outside of The Kingdom and slaying some walkers. Could they be heading to Alexandria, in an effort by Morgan to introduce Ezekiel to Rick?

Zombie Gates

ย

Reinforcing the Sanctuary’s walker walls is another shot of some mutilated undeadย chained to its outskirts.

“Right before Negan pounds on the gate at Alexandria, there’s a shot of a zombie,” Nicotero says. “Again, you can see that because of the way that his wrist is spiked and because there’s a spike going through his torso, that’s another tease of the exterior of the Sanctuary.”

We can expect some serious action-packed scenes to take place outside of the Sanctuary once the All Out War storyline kicks off.

Overlooked

While everything from the first four slides and all things related to them got us hyped watching the season 7 trailer, the least talked about moments seem be those which came “post-credits.”

Tara and Heath are in danger but they’re not getting much attention from fans.

“The whole thing about the trailer is the promise of new worlds, and that’s really what’s out thereโ€ฆ the Sanctuary, the Kingdom, Alexandria and wherever Tara and Heath are,” Nicotero says. “To me, that’s what’s most interesting.”

We’ll get to see what Heath and Tara are up to when The Walking Dead returns for its seventh season in October.
