A couple of weeks ago, it was “We had sex with the same dead guy. That doesn’t make us friends.” As of this Sunday’s Say Yes episode of The Walking Dead, Rosita and Sasha have put their differences aside in favor of killing Negan, even if it means sacrificing their own lives in the process.
Typically, fans of the AMC series are able to look to Robert Kirkman’s comics to decipher what’s next as the TV show often mirrors the events of the books. However, Rosita and Sasha never went on any self-sacrificing team-up mission in the books.
For more information, ComicBook.com asked executive producer Greg Nicotero, who directed Episode 7×12 what exactly the two women are up to on Sunday night’s After the Dead show.
“We’ve watched both of these women reel from the death of Glenn, the death of Abraham,” Nicotero said. “Of course, Rosita is activated because of what happened at the end of episode eight, where she uses Eugene’s bullet. So, as far as she’s concerned, she’s on this path of, ‘I got nothing to lose. Everything that I did, in terms of trying to kill Negan, and doing it unsuccessfully’ has locked her into this direction where she’s a bit reckless. You can see when she finds that toy gun and holds it up and there’s the little orange plug in the end, that she’s upset. She is willing to go out there and do what needs to be done whether anybody else is with her or not.”
The one person Rosita knows would have no problem setting out to kill Negan is Sasha. Sasha also happens to be the one person who won’t want to wait around for Rick and Michonne to decide it’s time to attack the Saviors.
“When she goes over and she sees Sasha at the end, she’s kind of sick of waiting,” Nicotero said. “She’s ready to go. I think that she knows that Sasha also, because of Abraham and because everything Sasha’s been doing, that she has an ally.”
Fans are naturally assuming this really will be the end of both Sasha and Rosita given recent events in the actresses’ lives. Sonequa Martin-Green joined the cast of CBS’ new Star Trek series and Christian Serratos has recently been congratulated on a pregnancy. Both of those factors aside, the more foreboding facts are the ground work laid in The Walking Dead comics. Sasha’s comic book counterpart Holly meets a grim fate upon heading to Negan’s Sanctuary and if one, or both, of these women gets themselves caught behind enemy lines, the horrifying moments might just be realized on television.
As for Rosita, the guilt is still weighing heavily on her in the aftermath of Olivia and Spencer’s death. As much was on display when the character lashed out at Father Gabriel for offering advice.
“[Rosita] feels that her actions resulted in the death of Olivia,” Nicotero said. “She watched Spencer die, so clearly she’s on a great trajectory. And I really like what Christian has done. I like what Sonequa’s done.”
“I always love what we do on The Walking Dead because we set everything up in the first half of the season, and then we start putting the gas pedal down.”
