The Walking Dead Fan Theory Gives Extra Meaning To Eugene’s Last Words

A fan of AMC‘s The Walking Dead has come up with an interesting theory regarding the final words spoken by Eugene Porter in the Hostiles and Calamities episode from Sunday night.

While many fans suspect Eugene of having crossed over to the dark side, which is very much a possibility seeing as Josh McDermitt won’t rule out the possibility, the fan who goes by mrlonelywolf on Reddit is pouring optimism into his theory, suggesting that Eugene has not crossed over. Rather, Eugene is surviving and has a full comprehension of the fact that “We are Negan” is a cover of the group’s identity rather than speaking for their individual roles and true allegiances.

According to the fan, Eugene is acting much more wisely than Daryl. He cites that when Daryl is “thrown a bone” in the first half of the season when his door was left unlocked and he quickly tried to escape without formulating a plan. Eugene, on the other hand, was offered an opportunity to poison Negan and turned it down in favor of a grander plan.

Eugene is not the only one who is formulating a plan, as Austin Amelio told ComicBook.com that Dwight has “a bigger plan” as well.

“As much as this episode focuses on Eugene pretending to be someone he isn’t, it also focuses on Dwight and how he has also pretended to be someone he isn’t,” mrlonelywolf said.

The theory goes into deep detail, vouching for Eugene’s hidden allegiance for Rick Grimes remaining in tact, while also suggesting that Dwight hitting his breaking point in losing Sherry has also turned him against Negan.

“At first watch, it’s easy to just read this statement as Eugene doing what he does best – reading the situation and understanding it alongside his over-complicated manner of speaking. Almost like he’s seeing Dwight as a potential friend and reaffirming to him both his name, and the fact he’s now ‘Negan’ to try and earn his trust. However, I don’t think this is true at all and there’s much more to this than meets the eye. The whole episode was about these two characters doing what they can to survive and assuming personalities which aren’t who they truly are. The ‘Eugene’ and ‘Dwight’ that are referenced here relate to their true selves – before Negan. Who they were. Eugene explicitly highlights this in his statement – ‘I’m Eugene, you’re Dwight’ – firstly an admittance that Eugene knows Dwight isn’t truly bad and secondly a reminder to them both of their past selves. He’s telling Dwight that they are who they were and always will be. Stating “we are Negan” is purely an affirmation of the story they’ve both created. Neither truly are Negan, but Eugene is essentially saying, ‘Remember, we’re both who we always have been, but while we’re here in the Sanctuary, we’re Negan.’”

Many fans are likely hoping mrlonelywolf is on to something as Eugene is a valuable asset for Alexandria, given his ability to manufacture weapons. However, for the time being, the survivor will do just that at the Sanctuary, fulfilling every request Negan has to preserve his own life.
