The second episode of The Walking Dead‘s seventh season saw an extremely gruesome zombie kill in its early moments.

As Carol and Morgan made their way to the Kingdom for the first time, they were lead by soldiers wielding guns, swords and axes. One of the soldiers on horseback used their axe to cop down wakers along the way and one of those walkers stood out, in particular.

The axe came down through the face of an undead roamer, slicing its face off and unveiling the bloody inside of its skull and brain.

Now, Greg Nicotero has released a behind the scenes look at the prosthetic make up and equipment which went into making the gruesome and violent look. Check it out below.

Nicotero directed both the Season 7 premiere and the second episode which took viewers to the Kingdom for the first time. Originally, the episode was planned as the third of Season 7, however the backlash of the premiere’s brutality and violence prompted a change in the line-up. Episode 2 brought a sense of humor and levity to the show like no episode before it, despite having a gruesome zombie kill in it.
