The latest episode of The Walking Dead – titled ‘New Best Friends‘ – saw Daryl work his way through some big decisions.
The guy had to figure out how to work with Ezekiel’s alternate way of thinking, he had to stop Richard from almost killing Carol, he had to lie to his best friend’s face, and still find a way to bond with a tiger.
That’s a lot of work.
By the end of the episode, Daryl must have called it quits. He packed his bag, told Morgan he was leaving, and headed back to the Hilltop.
Why would Daryl leave so soon? He has Carol to keep him company, and The Kingdom seems like the only safe place for him right now.
According to Norman Reedus, there were plenty of reasons for Daryl to skip town. In an interview with EW, the actor revealed the character’s motives.
“It’s a different thing, because they need the numbers. They need these people to fight Negan. But at the same time, he’s not going to let him sacrifice her for that job. You’re going to have to find another way, you know?”
Reedus continued, “He’s just done. He’s going to do it himself. The thing about Daryl is, he’s loyal to one group, and it’s hard for him to stay behind and stay behind and stay behind. He’s just had enough. He’s got to figure out a way to do this where it works for everybody, but also he’s not going to take anything away from his family.”
Daryl has always been one to do things himself, and it looks like the same will apply to the war against Negan. Action has to be taken, and Daryl is ready to make it happen.
