‘The Walking Dead’ Recap With Spoilers: Time For After

Rick sits in a shipping container at the trash heap. His hands are tied and he is sweating. The doors open and the sun blinds him. Jadis is standing outside with her people, one of whom is drawing Rick. Ge is wearing underwear and bandage where her bullet grazed. Rick reiterates his request for her to join him. She silently takes a picture of him on an old camera before telling him to turn and taking another picture. Two men start to close the door but the man drawing asks them to wait. She plans to “sculpt” him “after”.

The Walking Dead‘s opening credits play.

Eugene sits in his Sanctuary room writing notes about what he knows and what he doesn’t know. Dwight enters the room. Eugene immediately reveals his knowledge of Dwight being a traitor. He requests Dwight stop the betrayals now and, in exchange, he will keep it a secret. Dwight grabs Eugene and sits him down.

“The Saviors are finished,” Dwight tells him. “Negan’s finished. This place, what it’s been, that’s all over. Food and water’s running low. Workers are angry. The Saviors, they’re getting scared. This place is gonna fall. All you have to do to be on the winning side is to stand down. All you have to do is nothing. Wait. Let it play out. Can you do that? You’ve seen what happens here. Heard the screams. Smelt the burning skin. You don’t got blood on your hands yet but that’s coming. Once you do those things, you become those things, and there’s no going back. No forgetting it.”

Eugene says he is only concerned with being safe. “Yes, I’m Negan,” Eugene said. “That ain’t perfect but we are Saviors. We save.”

Eugene leaves the room after telling Dwight he will keep his secret should he keep the people inside the Sanctuary’s walls from harm.

Mark and Laura board the Sanctuary doors. Eugene asks how long she thinks it will last and she guesses two days.

The doctor calls Eugene into his office and reveals Gabriel has a few infections and will need more help. Doctor Carson wants to head downstairs and requests Eugene stay with Gabriel. Gabriel starts coughing and asks Eugene to sit. He does.

Gabriel reaches for water and Eugene watches him struggle a bit before helping him get a drink. Gabriel asks if Eugene is going to help him get the doctor out but Eugene insists he only does what is in his own best interest. Gabriel tells him to have faith and trust himself. “It’s absurd,” Eugene tells him. 

Gabriel continues his plea, urging Eugene to do the right thing. Eugene sees the red paint on his own finger and has thoughts about Dwight.

Outside of the Sanctuary, Morgan is taking aim with a sniper. He suddenly sees Daryl’s truck pull up and park and and radios to the Saviors to tell them its one of theirs. 

In the Sanctuary, Eugene is greeted by one of Negan’s wives. She wants her boombox back in working condition but Eugene is distressed about being trapped. He asks for her bottle of wine, claiming it will help him sleep. He is summoned directly to Negan a moment later.

Daryl is ready to charge the truck into the building and send the walkers into the Sanctuary. Michonne, Rosita, and Tara will cover him and distract the walkers. Morgan joins their conversation and offers to help. Rosita is against the plan, saying it is risky. Rosita vouches for Rick Grimes, says he is talking to the Scavengers to boost their numbers. Tara feels the guilt of not revealing Oceanside’s weapons earlier. Rosita leaves. Morgan tells her there is a car near the east side lookout she can use. Michonne, however, wants to stay and see this through. 

Rosita says she learned waiting is the best option sometimes and she had to learn as much from seeing Sasha walk out of the coffin.

In the Sanctuary’s meeting room, Eugene sits down with Negan. He says his people are going to die if things aren’t fixed soon. “I’m livin’ no matter what,” Negan said, although he doesn’t want to see his people get shot up or chewed up. He reminds Eugene that he is aware of how smart he is, prompting Eugene to remind him of his loyalty. Negan reaches out his hand and Eugene attempts to kiss it but Negan was looking for a handshake. It’s a sign of mutual respect which not many people get from Negan. 

In his room, Eugene works on the boombox but might be crafting something else. He explores some warehouse areas with a flashlight strapped to his head. He discovers the coffin Sasha was in when she died. Inside, only her iPod remains, prompting some emotion. 

Outside, Morgan watches Daryl approach the Sanctuary. Morgan and Tara look through a scope. Michonne seems to be second guessing the plan. “You up for this?” Daryl asks her.

“I came here because I wanted to see things for myself,” Michonne said. She says things are working now and they might just need to trust that things are going to keep working. “What we’re about to do, it’s not worth risking us,” Michonne said. Daryl says it is for him, though. They agree Michonne should back out.

Atop the Sanctuary, Eugene sends the iPod on a remote control glider. It will play music and redirect the herd outside of the Sanctuary. Just as he is about to send it, someone holds a gun to him and tells him not to turn around. 

Tara approaches the building and is ready to go. Morgan is ready to cover her.

Atop he Sanctuary, Dwight orders Eugene to back away from the drone. Eugene insists he is trying to save people but Dwight says that will get Rick and Eugene’s old friends killed. Eugene insists they were “traveling companions” at best. They argue about what to do but Eugene ultimately presses play on the iPod and sends the glider out above the walkers. Dwight doesn’t shoot him.

Daryl drives his truck toward the Sanctuary.

Dwight shoots the glider out of the air and disappears. 

Tara opens fire on the windows. Morgan guns them down. 

Eugene rushes for cover. Daryl puts a cement brick on the gas pedal and leaps from the truck. It plows into the walls of the Sanctuary and the walkers begin making their way inside. Workers and soldiers are eaten by walkers as gunfire and chaos ensue. Eugene watches it unfold and sees Dwight doing little to stop it. Regina guns walkers down and they pile up at the steps. Eugene is becoming terrified and then infuriated. 

A moment later, Eugene storms into Gabriel’s room and tells him he will never help him escape. 

Later, Negan requests Eugene make bullets to fill the guns again. He will do it and has one more item for him. Just as Eugene is about to reveal Dwight’s betrayal, Dwight enters the room with Regina and others. He ends up lying and says he can fix the communication lines. 

In his room. Eugene hears the sounds of gunshots and breaks down. He rips a shot and downs some wine — it’s not easy. He eventually starts vomiting into the sink.

Rick is escorted out of his container at the trash heap by one man. There is no one around. A walker with arrow attached to a helmet is brought into the heap. “Time for after,” Jadis tells him. Rick fights the men and uses the pole attached to the walker skull as a weapon before getting the best of Jadis, as well. He pushes her face onto the ground next to the walker and insists he is leaving. He suggests they run when he does. Jadis, however, orders her people to stand down. 

Jadis asks what it means to join his cause. He tells her they will surround the Sanctuary, order them to stand down, and Rick kills Negan. Jadis wants what the Saviors have but Rick will give them only a fourth. and he won’t let her sculpt him nude.

They all ride up to a water tower where Rick finds a man hanging upside down getting eaten by walkers. He puts the walkers down and radios for the walkers but no one responds, so he grabs the rifle and heads to the top of the tower. 

From the top, Rick sees the Sanctuary with no walkers outside of it and is terrified.
