Fans’ expectations for The Walking Dead Season Eight to begin with a high-speed premiere and non-stop batch of episodes to follow sound like they are going to met and possibly exceeded. A recent interview with Paul “Jesus” Rovia actor Tom Payne revealed the coming run through the zombie apocalypse on AMC is going to start off with a bang and keep the volume up in the weeks which follow.
“It’s been just crazy action, and really exciting to film and to read and to be involved in,” Payne told IGN. “Scott Gimple’s spoken a lot about the 100th episode being a jump off for the next hundred episodes. Season 8 certainly starts with a big bang and then continues to ramp up, which is really exciting. I know the audience will be really happy with, certainly how it starts, because they’re taking the fight back, and then every single episode in the first half there’s a moment which makes you go, ‘Wow, oh my god, I can’t believe that.’”
Character Balance

One of the common criticisms from fansย of Season Sevenย of The Walking Dead related to the inconsistent appearances from fan-favorite characters. For example, one week Carl would hop in the back of a truck, creating an interesting new story thread, only for Tara to be the only established character featured in the next week’s hour.
According to Payne, Season Eightย will offer “strong work for certain characters” which, according to his further description, sounds like exactly what fans of the AMC series are asking for.
“I think there’s some really strong work from certain characters this year who have been given amazing character arcs to go through,” Payne said. “There’s just an insane amount of action, and different dilemmas. There are characters who are involved in war, so what is the right thing to do during war? Is it just kill everyone? In every war, there are casualties who maybe shouldn’t have been. There are dilemmas that I hope the audience is involved in as well in watching it, and there are choices to be made of how to move forward at certain stages. I’m excited to see what the audience thinks of decisions that certain characters make.”
That Scene With Morgan
One of the stand-out moments in The Walking Dead‘s Season Eightย trailer was Morgan andย Jesus appearing to have a fight in the woods. Some fans think they’re genuinely throwing down whileย others believe Morgan might be training the Hilltop character. Jesus, however, is a very capable fighting, making training less likely.
“For me, that was an ‘oh my god, yes, I get to show off some fight stuff,’ and also with another character who has fight stuff,” Payne said of the moment with Morgan actor Lennieย James. “Whatever it is, it’s just very cool to see characters who know what they’re doing get together and do that.”
