The Walking Dead fans know a thing or two about cliffhangers. Whether the CDC just erupted and sent our group into an unknown fate or a baseball bat came down on the skull of an unknown fan favorite character, the AMC series has a way of hooking us all back in for more episodes when the show returns.

With Season 7, the finale comes in on the heels of Negan‘s introduction which became one of the most talked about subjects from April through October in 2016. Everyone wanted to know, “Who did Negan kill?” Some fans loved the concept of wondering who died for seven months while others claimed it ruined the scene. In any case, the show delivered deaths from Negan’s bat and fans may have learned a harsh lesson in being careful what they wish for.

There are now eight episodes left in Season 7. The finale is upon us and the hype for it is slowly starting to build. Of course, that means we’re starting wonder if there will be another cliffhanger.

As it turns out, a decision hasn’t been made yet regarding a Season 7 finale cliffhanger. Speaking to Greg Nicotero aboard the 2017 Walker Stalker Cruise over the weekend, ComicBook.com learned the executive producer’s (he directs the Season 7 finale) perspective on the final moments.

“I don’t know,” Nicotero said. “I’ve turned in my cut, but Scott [Gimple] hasn’t done his pass on it yet so nobody’s seen it. I’ve seen it, the other executive producers have seen it, and that’s it. The actors haven’t even seen it.”

The Season 7 finale will air on April 2. We might just have to wait until then to find out how The Walking Dead will leave us hanging this time around but, hopefully, it’s on a high note for Rick Grimes and the group. According to Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Andrew Lincoln earned a “moment” in the episode.

The official synopsis for the back half of The Walking Dead Season 7 reads…

Rick’s group will find out yet again that the world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s much bigger than anything they’ve seen so far. While they have a singular purpose – to defeat Negan – it won’t come easy. More importantly, victory will require more than Alexandria. They need the numbers of the Kingdom and the Hilltop, but, similar to how Rick felt, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) do not want bloodshed. To convince them otherwise will take more than speeches. The lengths Rick and the group will have to go to in order to find weapons, food and new fighters is nothing short of remarkable.
We’ll meet new survivors in incredible places. We’ll see Rick and the group tested in ways we’ve never seen before. We’ll see treachery from people we trust.Rick is confident as he will see his group and many others band together with the common goal of taking down Negan.But no amount of planning will prepare the group for all-out war with Negan and his army.

The Walking Dead returns for the rest of its seventh season on February 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. Fear the Walking Dead‘s third season does not yet have a premiere date but with The Walking Dead finale set for April 2, expectations for Fear‘s return are set for April 9.
