During The Walking Dead‘s special episode 100 and season 8 premiere red carpet, Daryl Dixon star Norman Reedus was asked what breed of dog he’d choose if the roughneck hunter had a canine companion.

“I think it would be a Blue Heeler mix, kind of a Mad Max dog,” Reedus replied. “Sort of light blue with the dots, maybe two different colored eyes, and it would only answer to me, and no one else could pet it but me. I don’t want anyone to be able to pet him but me.”
“I think it would be really cool, and I think it would add to my character,” Reedus continued. “So just tell everyone to write in.”
Also known as Australian Cattle Dogs, it’s easy to see how Reedus’ dog-friend would be a perfect match for Daryl: the breed is known for being energetic, intelligent, independent and protective, and for forming a strong attachment to its owner and their possessions. The dogs are a lot like Reedus’ character in that way, in that they’re extremely loyal and protective โ making one a perfect sidekick for Daryl.
Reedus previously shared his ideal ending for Daryl in an interview with CNET, saying, “I would walk up over a hill and then a little wolf puppy would come out of the woods and follow me up. And people would just go, ‘Whatever happened to that guy?’”
The Walking Dead season 8 is now airing Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
