The third season finale of Rick and Morty just ended and fans are understandably shook. While it was yet another hilarious episode, many are also grappling with the fact that this is the last episode we’re likely to see for some time.

Given the long wait between Season One and Two, and the even longer wait between Season Two and Three, it’s understandable that we won’t see the show return until next year at the earliest.

But series co-creator Dan Harmon gave hope for fans when he spoke about his reasons for truncating the current season. Though Season Three was initially supposed to run for 14 episodes, it only ran for 10, leaving the writing team with some ideas they can use later on.

Harmon spoke about some ideas changing as they were discussed in the writers room, leaving many storylines on the table to return to.

“If an episode grows from one [idea] into an entirely different [idea] that’s still no better than the first, maybe we’re writing wrong. But we don’t back off on stuff so much as we say ‘maybe later’ and move on. We have a pretty hefty shoebox from season 3 of ideas that are ready to go. Some are fully written, in fact.”

Despite how encouraging Harmon’s comments may seem, we’re still left to deal with that gut-punch of a finale.

Here are some of the best reactions from fans who watched the last episode of Rick and Morty‘s third season.
