The Simpsons Shares New Spooky Preview For Its Next Treehouse of Horror (And Some Big Guests Are Part Of It)

What would the spooky season be without Springfield giving animation fans one of its traditional “Treehouse of Horror” episodes? The Simpsons is once again planning on unleashing new tales of terror just in time for Halloween, and this year’s entry has revealed a preview that is sure to send shivers down your spine. Each entry of the annual spookshow has seen Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie experiencing hilarious twists on classic horror stories, and it seems as though this year will be no different. Luckily, Fox is planning to bring in some major celebrities to help make things that much creepier on Evergreen Terrace.

A new preview for The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror XXXVI confirms that celebrities Idris Elba, Ike Barinholtz, Viola Davis, and Michael Keaton are joining the creepy festivities. On top of the guest list, here’s how the long-running animated series describes the upcoming special, “In this year’s installment of the annual fright-fest, the town is menaced by a mysterious murdering monster from out of the sewers, Krusty has a demonic special guest on his live Halloween special, and we go a thousand years into Springfield’s poseable plastic post-apocalyptic future in the all-new “Treehouse of Horror XXXVI” episode of The Simpsons airing Sunday, Oct 19 (8:00-8:31 PM ET/PT) on FOX.”

Treehouse of Horror’s Past And Future

To start, let’s dive into what the upcoming segments of this year’s Treehouse of Horror might be parodying, as the long-running tradition has long taken jabs at popular movies, television, and other creepy campfire stories. While on face value, a story regarding a “murdering monster from out of the sewers” might refer to Stephen King’s It, The Simpsons has already parodied the brutal murders of Pennywise the Clown. Though with It: Welcome To Derry on the horizon for HBO Max, perhaps the series is revisiting this King property.

As for Krusty The Clown’s upcoming segment, this might be a parody of “Late Night With The Devil,” the horror film that sees a late-night talk show host experiencing a skin-crawling encounter on their television program. The final segment described here has us stumped, as we aren’t entirely sure which story refers to a future apocalyptic scenario that involves “poseable plastic.” When it comes to looking at the future of Springfield’s celebration of Halloween, it might be good to look into the annual tradition’s past.

The Simpsons’ first Treehouse of Horror debuted around thirty-five years ago in 1990, setting the stage for the animated series to dive into some serious supernatural shenanigans. With the Fox show already confirmed to keep running until season forty at least, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we have at least a few more Halloween bonanzas before the series draws to a close. Considering how long The Simpsons has run, there’s no way of knowing when the show will finally take a bow, though Treehouse of Horror is definitely something we’ll miss when Springfield no longer shares new adventures.
