When Alien vs. Predator hit theaters in 2004, it did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel in 2007, but was generally panned by critics and fans alike. Count Alien star Sigourney Weaver among them.

Speaking from the London Film and Comic-Con this past weekend, Weaver was asked if she wanted her character – the franchise heroine Ripley – to die at the end of Alien 3. Weaver revealed that she did, and Alien vs. Predator was a big reason why.

"Well, yes – because I heard that Fox was gonna do Alien vs Predator," Weaver said (via Radio Times). "Which really depressed me because I was very proud of the movies.

"I've nothing against building a movie on a video game but at the time, it was, as [Aliens director] Jim Cameron said I think publically, 'why would you want to do that?'" Weaver continued. "It's like making Alien meets the Wolfman."

Alien vs. Predator actually began as a comic book story, published by Dark Horse Comics, that brought the two franchises together for the first time. This led to a cameo by a Xenomorph's skull in Predator 2, and suddenly the crossover was a franchise of its own, leading to big budget videogames and movies.

Weaver went to say that the crossover caused Alien creator Ridley Scott to drop out of directing another film in the series, only returning in 2012 for the prequel Prometheus.

"I think it caused more problems than it was worth," Weaver concluded.
