While the ostensible mission statement for Green Lanterns: Rebirth #1 was to introduce fans to the buddy cop give-and-take between new recruit Jessica Cruz and slightly-less-new recruit Simon Baz, a pair of Earth-born Green Lanterns whose rings have tapped them as the Green Lantern of Sector 2814.

Of course, that's hardly an exclusive title anymore. It seems like every time you turn around, there's another Green Lantern of Sector 2814, and while Hal Jordan may have been the first human to get the gig, there have been a bunch in the recent past.

Why? Well, nobody seems to know, but going back into the prophecy-driven tone that drove the series up to the Blackest Night crossover event, it seems that the rings "know" that "something" is coming.

Along with the prophecy comes the feeling that Green Lantern is abandoning its more recent space opera feel and embracing the kind of deep, broad mythology that Geoff Johns crafted during his decade on the comic -- which, of course, started with Green Lantern: Rebirth in 2005.

Part of that? A new ring will apparently be introduced -- one ring to rule them all? Perhaps. This one, held by a disfigured and long-lost Guardian of the Universe, hides inside an ancient stone box and, when opened, seems to shine the whole rainbow of the emotional spectrum out its top.

Johns, of course, co-wrote this one-shot with Green Lantern Rebirth artist Ethan Van Sciver providing some of the line art, including what's seen here. The pair won't be on the ongoing series, though, so if this is to be picked up, it will be by regular writer Sam Humphries.

Green Lanterns #1 by Humphries, Robson Rocha, and Joe Prado, is on sale in two weeks.
