Hal Jordan And The Green Lantern Corps #4 Review - The Lantern Renaissance Continues

The Green Lantern Corps is greater than any one individual, and writer Robert Venditti is expertly crafting a narrative that puts that idea front and center.

The book might be called Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, but as important as Hal is to to the storyline, equally noteworthy are lanterns like Guy Gardner and John Stewart, and all for different reasons.

As great as even they are, it could be argued that the most important character in all of this is Sinestro, who provides the central element for all the other lanterns to react to. Whether it's his machinations like the fear engine, his methods of leadership amongst his own corps, or his verbal sparring match against Guy Gardner, Sinestro is the element that makes everything else work.

Sinestro's presence is only heightened by the amazing pencils and colors of Ethan Van Sciver and Jason Wright. Van Sciver is supremely talented, but there is just something about the way he draws a lantern construct that makes it feel larger than life, just like it should be. His Sinestro is menacing without overly relying on stoic expressions. He's not afraid to be emotive, hilariously evident in his conversation with Gardner.

"Your ring can create a construct of any object your mind can conjure, and you create a truck. How quaint."

Speaking of Gardner, wherever you stand on the character, it's incredibly hard not to like him in this issue, and Venditti just seems to get the essence of the character perfectly.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #4 is a substantial move forward in the storyline and sets the stage for a few promising plot threads. So far the book has been a pleasant reminder of why the corps matter, and why we love them so much.
