Suicide Squad Director Reveals Story Behind Boomerang's Pink Plush Unicorn

When you bring together a group of the most dangerous baddies of the DC Universe, you've got to allow room for a few quirks. I mean, c'mon, Suicide Squad has the ever-odd Harley Quinn in its roster, so of course there's going to be a few weird things going on behind-the scenes. Or, in Captain Boomerang's case, there'll apparently be a particular on-screen fetish for pink unicorns.

Confused yet? Don't be! Director David Ayer recently spoke with Empire to discuss the villain's strange obsession and reveal which cartoon series the character is understandably in love with.

In his interview, Ayer told the magazine the unicorn plushie was originally a set decoration piece in the John F. Ostrander Federal Building. "[Pinky] was actually intended to be a piece of set decoration in one of our office building sets," he said.

"I thought [Boomerang] needed a little something kind of fun and silly and it kept appearing throughout the film. It became a bit of a mascot," Ayer then explained, telling fans the unicorn was meant to represent all things George "Digger" Harkness. The villain was particularly fond of the stuffed animal, enough so for him to even take Pinky into battle and beyond.

And, what's more, Ayer went on to confirm one of his fans' biggest suspicions about Captain Boomerang: The guy is a total Brony.

"Yes, [he's a] Brony," the director confessed. "Which is fine. I think it's a good thing and gives him a little hobby besides robbing banks."

Clearly, Harkness could use a hobby or three that don't trigger his homicidal tendencies or thieving ways. And, honestly, what could be a better distraction than the cute, joyful overtones of My Little Pony. Suicide Squad doesn't explicitly connect the baddie's unicorn to the animated series, but Pinky does share a very similar name to the show's character Pinkie Pie. And, of course, pink unicorns are kind of commonplace in the friendly town of Ponyville.

If you've not seen Captain Boomerang's fetish for yourselves, then you can be introduced to the villain's fluffy companion when you see Suicide Squad. The film is in theaters now, so seriously - go see it.
