Jared Leto's Joker Not Appearing in Justice League?

There are persisting rumors about which DCEU characters will be making an appearance in Zack Snyder's Justice League. We know we'll see the main League memebers (Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Flash, Aquaman); we know Henry Cavill's Superman will return; we know Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor will be back; and we know we'll meet new supporting characters like Aquaman's Atlantean advisor (Willem Dafoe) and queen (Amber Heard).

Another DCEU character who has been rumored for the film is Jared Leto's Joker, who we last saw breaking Harley Quinn out of prison in Suicide Squad. Unfortunately for fans of Leto's "Mr. J," a new report is claiming to debunk any notion of a Joker appearance in Justice League.

This is probably not a "deal-breaker" for many fans, who most likely weren't going to show up to a Justice League movie hoping to see Leto's Joker as a featured player. JL is about a teamup of DC's most powerful heroes to combat threats that none of them can handle alone; The Joker doesn't quite qualify as a threat on that scale, and any deviations the film made to try and further develop the character would probaly end up in one of two quagmires:

  1. Giving fans too much - to the point that it distracts from the main plot of the film, invovling the invasion of General Steppenwolf and his army from the planet Apokolips.
  2. Once again not giving fans enough of The Joker. If the character were to show up in some kind of small cameo it might be fun - that is, if fans had gotten a good enough look at him in Suicide Squad. Since there were lawsuits invovled with SS not delivering enough Joker, that's a headache best avoided a second time.

It's a safe bet that many DC fans would rather save another go-around with The Joker until Ben Affleck's Batman solo movie arrives in theaters. Somewhere we can spend significant time unpacking the character and his already-established violent history with Batman.

Rumors about Affleck's Batman film include possible story approaches ("Hush," "Under the Red Hood") that tradtionally involve Joker in a big way. Whether it's resolving the issue of Jason Todd/Robin's murder, or helping another mastermind villain royally f*ck with Batman's mind, Jared Leto's Joker has an active future in the DCEU. It just doesn't have to start with Justice League.

Suicide Squad is in theaters. Wonder Woman arrives on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 16, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
