While the LEGO Batman Movie is expected to win the box office war in the United States this Valentine's Day weekend, it will get a run for its money overseas.
Deadline is reporting updated projections that put Fifty Shades Darker in the running to win the international numbers war.
While in the United States, the LEGO Batman Movie is expected to rake in between $60 to $65 million dollars, compared to Fifty Shades Darker which is projected to make $35 million.
In the U.S., the LEGO Batman Movie is opening on over 4,000 screens, while Fifty Shades is screening on around 3,700.
But the international market is a different story, where LEGO Batman and Fifty Shades are opening in 61 and 57 offshore markets respectively.
Deadline puts Fifty Shades projections at $80 to $120 million, with LEGO Batman getting about $40 million.
It should be close, but the projections put the former Twilight fanfic at a clear head above the next LEGO film when you tally all the markets.
One reason projections are so low for the sultry sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey is that the first film was released on a Valentine's Day weekend when the day itself fell on Saturday. This year it falls on a Tuesday, which makes the opening a true five-day weekend event.
We'll see which wins out next week: Family Night or Date Night.
Will Arnett reprises his starring role from The LEGO Movie as the voice of LEGO Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. Zach Galifianakis (Hangover films) stars as The Joker; Michael Cera (TV's Arrested Development) as the orphan Dick Grayson; Rosario Dawson (TV's Daredevil) as Barbara Gordon; and Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter films) as Alfred.
The LEGO Batman Movie is directed by Chris McKay and produced by Dan Lin, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Roy Lee, who worked together on The LEGO Movie. It is written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, with additional screenplay material by Jared Stern & John Whittington, based on LEGO Construction Toys. Jill Wilfert, Matthew Ashton and Will Allegra serve as executive producers.
The LEGO Batman Movie will open in theaters on February 10, 2017.
