This Is Infamous is reporting that Boyhood star Ethan Hawke is in talks with Marvel Studios to play Doctor Strange.
Hawke has worked with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson in the past, which put his name in the rumor mill early on. Then along came Joaquin Phoenix, but the report suggests that Marvel has given up on trying to convince Phoenix that he’s a good fit for a role he’s hesitant to take, whether it be due to the nature of the role, the money, or the long term commitment that Marvel is pushing.

That commitment would see Hawke appear in six films. Marvel reportedly put the offer to Hawke on Friday, and Hawke accepted over the weekend. Now the studio is just waiting for the right time to make the announcement.
For Hawke’s part, he’s had a critically acclaimed career, receiving Oscar nominations for his performance in Training Day and his writing of Before Sunset and Before Midnight, but Doctor Strange will be his first role in a true blockbuster film franchise.
This is still an unconfirmed rumor, but it’s a reasonable one. With New York Comic Con right around the corner, I can’t imagine we’ll have to wait too long for word from Marvel.
