Margaret Qualley is in negotiations to play the female lead in Warner Bros. adaptation of horror manga Death Note, THR reports. Qualley will be featured opposite male lead Nat Wolff.

The film follows a young man (Wolff) who discovers notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it, and decides to use the notebook to cleanse the world of undesirable or useless people. The deaths lead to an investigation by a brilliant detective, resulting in a cat-and-mouse game with the killer.

The film will be set in the United States, and it's unclear how the Japanese character will be translated. Qualley's character is unnamed, but the closest thing to a female lead in the source material Misa Amane, a pop star who becomes infatuated with Light (Wolff).

Qualley is known for her role on HBO's The Leftovers. The Death Note film is being directed by Adam Wingard, from a script by Jeremy Slater.

Death Note starts production in spring 2016.
