We looked early in the season at merging Fantasy Football and Star Wars, but now an artist has gone for the superhero angle – and one step farther, creating the Superhero Football League. Jim Ransdell at SportsDesignBlog created this “What If” project (great name there, comic book fan), offering a look at a football league populated entirely by teams based off superheroes, a 24 team league split into Marvel and DC.

The helmets contain the logos and color schemes for each team, divided into six four-team divisions total:
Avengers Division: Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor
Heroes Division: Punisher, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Ghost Rider
Fantastic Division: Human Torch, The Thing, Silver Surfer, and a general Fantastic Four
Justice League Division: Aquaman, Batman, Green Lantern, Superman
Legends Division: Shazam, Hawkman, Robin, Martian Manhunter
CW Division: The Flash, Firestorm, Green Arrow, The Atom
So, how would a season with these teams play out? If the hero the team is named after is the coach, it’s pretty hard to see anything other than Captain America versus Batman in the SFL SUPER bowl, what with their mastery of strategy. Team Hulk is the most penalized in the league, with lots of overly-aggressive hits, with Hawkman in similar trouble. The Flash has the fastest running back in the league, and despite the smaller size of teams Ant-Man and The Atom, their players still pack a big punch. It’s a shame about the cheating scandal Martian Manhunter’s team got caught in – telepathically reading plays from opposing coaches. Team Shazam and Team Robin both show great talent despite how young their players are. Finally, Team Aquaman seems to just spend the entire game at the water/gatorade table. What’s up with that?
