After what seems like a near-endless barrage of casting announcements, American Gods filming has begun. The new TV series on Starz, based on the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman, started principal photography, and Gaiman was on set for the shoot. The writer tweeted out a picture from the set, though it wasn't exactly relevatory.

The photo, accompanied by "It's happening. It's really happening. #fuckyes" certainly shows Gaiman's excitement. It doesn't show much else, though, aside from his named chair and a copy of the script. The writer also tweeted on Wednesday that Ian McShane said his first line as Mr. Wednesday, which is just a surreal thought for him (and fans of the book). A second picture shows showrunner Bryan Fuller ready to shoot the first scene.

American Gods follows the story of Shadow, an ex-con who happens to be the bodyguard of the elusive Mr. Wednesday. Both end up embroiled in a war between old gods and new, though Mr. Wednesday (Woten aka Odin) has a vested interest in how that war turns out. Each of the gods are known by different, more modern names, all of which hint at who they truly are inside.

Joining Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday are Ricky Whittle as Shadow, Emily Browning as Shadow's wife Laura, Sean Harris as Mad Sweeney, Yetide Badaki as Bilquis, Bruce Langley as Technology Boy, Jonathan Tucker as Low-Key Lyesmith (you can probably figure that one out), and Crispin Glover as Mr. World. Cloris Leachman was just cast, as well, as Zorya Vechernyaya, one of the three sisters. Peter Stormare was cast as Czernobog, Chris Obi as Anubis, and Mousa Kraish as The Jinn this week.

The Bryan Fuller and Michael Green helmed series is shooting now in Toronto. No release schedule has yet been announced.
