Despite difficulties in the ratings department, 12 Monkeys has received utterly glowing reviews from press all over the internet (including here) and Hollywood landscape, along with a cult following of fans more dedicated to their favorite series than just about any other series out there. Now, it’s been granted a third season by Syfy for a ten-episode run.

“Syfy and UCP have been incredible creative partners, and I’m thrilled that we are going to tell the next โ even more twisty and emotional โ chapter of this time travel adventure,” executive producer Terry Matalas told EW in the announcement.
The first two seasons of the series each clocked in at 13 episodes (the second has a two-part season finale left), but this unexpected early announcement of a third season can only be looked at as a good thing, and hope for fans of the series that Matalas and his crew will be able to see it through.
“This season of 12 Monkeys has proven to be a breakthrough,” Jeff Wachtel, chief content officer of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and president of Universal Cable Productions said to EW. “From its epic storytelling to its grand aesthetic, Terry and the cast and crew have invested boundless energy and passion, and it showed. New legions of fans will discover what devoted viewers already know: It’s one of the best shows on television.”
12 Monkeys stars Aaron Stanford as James Cole and Amanda Schull as Cassandra Railly as time travelers seeking to stop the Army of the 12 Monkeys from ending the world – more than once, and in more than one way. It started with a plague, similar to the 1995 movie, and moved into a race against the end of time itself, still ongoing. Emily Hampshire, Kirk Acevedo, Todd Stashwick, and Barbara Sukowa also star.
The series airs Mondays at 9pm on Syfy, and season 3 will premiere in 2017.
