A new trailer for Assassin’s Creed was released online Tuesday morning, as teased with a new image Monday. The trailer (swan) dove much further into the actual plot of the movie, showcasing both of Michael Fassbender’s roles. For the uninitiated, Assassin’s Creed stories typically take place in both the past and present simultaneously, and this one is no different, as Fassbender stars in the modern day as Callum Lynch as well as in the past as Spanish Assassin Aguilar during the time of the Inquisition.

The first trailer for the film focused on the high-flying antics of Aguilar and his fellow Assassins in the past as they ran across rooftops in the parkour action the video game series is known for. Assassin’s Creed isn’t adapting one of the video games from Ubisoft’s popular franchise; instead it’s introducing new characters into that same existing world, just as the comicbook and novel additions to the franchise have.
Here, we get a closer look at Aguilar and Callum as the ancestor’s life is re-lived by his descendant. We also learn more about what it is Abstergo (the modern day front for the villainous Templars) hopes to find through Callum/Aguilar, hinting further at Marian Cotillard’s role in the movie.
The trailer, through Cotillard, outlines the concept of the story, and has enough signature Assassin’s Creed moments to make any franchise fan thrilled. “We work in the dark to serve the light” is even uttered by Fassbender, bringing the signature line of the game series to life.
“Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th-century Spain,” the official synopsis of the film reads. “Callum discovers he is a descendant from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.”
Assassin’s Creed hits theaters December 21, 2016, from director Justin Kurzel and 20th Century Fox.
