Star Wars: Episode VIII Title Possibly Revealed

Disney is hitting the runway for the newest addition to the Star Wars history books Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but fans are already looking new details on the next step in the franchise, Star Wars: Episode VIII.

A recent trademark by Lucasfilm might have shed some light on their chosen title. Lucasfilm filed a trademark request to the European Union Intellectual Property Office for “Star Wars Forces Of Destiny” (via AVSForum). It’s important to note that the trademark applies to a list of over 2000 items, including office supplies, clothing, toys, Christmas decorations, and motion pictures.

Up until now, the studio has been very quiet about Star Wars: Episode VIII, though some scenes, have already made their way online, like a fight between Kylo Ren’s forces and Rey and Luke.

It seems like a plausible title, but there is already a Star Wars product with a very similar moniker. Fantasy Flight produces a roleplaying game in conjunction with Disney and Lucasfilm called “Force and Destiny“. The game’s been out for awhile now, so the trademark isn’t likely related to the game, but it is worth mentioning how similar they are. Some Star Wars fans are skeptical, however.

“The problem with this as a title of a film is it isn’t doing anything,” Comicbook.com’s Star Wars expert Lucas Siegel says. “Episodes 1 and 4 lacked a verb, but both had “Emerges” as the implied verb behind their phrases. Everything else? Attack, Revenge, Strikes, Return, Awakens; I’d expect Episode VIII to follow suit with an active title.”

Star Wars: Episode VIII has already finished shooting for the most part, and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently said the team will take a big picture look at the franchise.

“There are [possible movies] that we have been talking a lot about,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told EW. “We are planning to sit down in January, since we will have had The Force Awakens released, [and] now Rogue One, and we’ve finished shooting Episode VIII. We have enough information where we can step back a little bit and say, ‘What are we doing? What do we feel is exciting? And what are some of the things we want to explore?’”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, directed by Gareth Edwards, hits theaters December 16, 2016. Star Wars: Episode VIII lands in theaters on December 15, 2017.
