There have been 14 MCU films so far, placing Doctor Strange square in the middle of the pack in terms of box office gross. We already reported that Doctor Strange is Marvel’s biggest solo character debut film ever, which may place it on top of Guardians of the Galaxy in terms of being the biggest dark horse success story the studio has produced.
Doctor Strange wasn’t a character that most people were begging to see onscreen; director Scott Derrickson stepped in and made something unique that audiences hadn’t really seen before, while still managing to honor the character’s comic book history. Despite some heavy criticisms about things like “whitewashing” the character of The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), the film managed to stand on its own merits and got the proper word of mouth that sent viewers all over the world into the theater for the experience.
At $222 million domestically and $425 million overseas (for $647 million total) Doctor Strange is yet another victory for Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. It is big victory for fans as well: the Marvel cosmos, magic, and multiverse are now all established, and the movies that play in those sandboxes are some of Marvel’s biggest hits. The full scope of the Marvel Universe is now not only a possibility but a lucrative opportunity: that’s good news for fans.
