Hundreds of news organizations from around the world wrote obituaries today for the late Carrie Fisher after the Star Wars and The Blues Brothers actress passed away in Los Angeles.

Precious few of them actually listed the cause of death Fisher had requested.
The request, documented in her one-woman show Wishful Drinking, which was later turned into a book, was to have her cause of death listed as “drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.”
That’s a beautiful turn-of-phrase but it’s also tied to an event that Fisher would talk (and joke) about for much of her adult life: the fact that during much of Star Wars‘s production she wasn’t allowed to wear undergarments.
For a little context, here’s the passage in question:
George comes up to me the first day of filming and he takes one look at the dress and says, “You can’t wear a bra under that dress.”
So, I say, “Okay, I’ll bite. Why?”
And he says, “Because. . . there’s no underwear in space.”
What happens is you go to space and you become weightless. So far so good, right? But then your body expands??? But your bra doesn’t—so you get strangled by your own bra.
Now I think that this would make for a fantastic obit—so I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.
There was a follow-up to Wishful Drinking in the works at the time of Fisher’s death, so it’s possible that in the coming months, audiences might get a little bit more of a taste for her wicked sense of humor and skillful turn of phrase.
