Last year was packed with milestones for comic book movies. New heroes were introduced to the world, others reimagined, and some united for the first time. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice brought the DC Comics Trinity together, Captain America: Civil War tore our beloved Avengers apart, and Deadpool proved how witty an anti-hero can be.

One thing all of these heroes have in common is super powers. Sure, they’re different across the board, but each of them have some sort of ability which enables to save the world (or at least their girlfriend, in Deadpool’s case). Those powers require countless hours of visual effect work to be realized on cinematically.

Taking the blue and green spaces which the actors are filmed in and turning them into Gotham City is a great responsibility which lies in the hands and imaginations of visual effects artists.

Nominated for the Best Visual Effects category are:

Each film has its own claims to fame in terms of visual effects. Civil War tossed a dozen Marvel heroes into battle. Rogue One saw Star Destroyers collide. Fantastic Beasts cast spells on magnificent creatures. Doctor Strange bent our minds beyond comprehension. Batman v. Superman brought a sense of grit unlike any other.
