When Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters in November, the film will be introducing a villain who even scares Loki. Thanks to Cate Blanchett, Hela will make her live-action debut in the next Thor flick and wreak havoc upon the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The goddess of death will get a new lease on life thanks to Loki’s lax rule over Asgard after booting Odin to who-knows-where. Speaking to Yahoo, Blanchett spoke about her work on Thor: Ragnarok and what inspired her and the film’s crew to give Hela a dark smoky look. It was there that the actress admitted the style was inspired by a slew of cosplayers.
“When I was starting to think about how she might look, I went back to the fanbase,” Blanchett said.
“All these girls were doing Hela makeup looks on YouTube. I thought about what their takes on her were. I spoke to Marvel about what she would look like when she would be unmasked, so she wasn’t a faceless, generic baddie. They were very open to everything.”
Earlier in the month, Blanchett also spoke about Hela and the character’s deadly aesthetic. The actress told Entertaiment Weekly, “There are so many iterations of the origin story. For any of these characters, there’s never one origin story. But yes, it was really interesting to go back. Most of the time she was masked. So that’s what I really talked to the Marvel team and Taika [Waititi] about was when we would chose to have her masked and when she wouldn’t be masked.”
