Tekken has a long and storied past. It’s why fans of the series are so dedicated and invested, and it’s also why newcomers can feel a bit overwhelmed. Like most Japanese fighting games, Tekken’s plot is one that twists and turns through its many entries, and it’s easy to get lost in that labyrinth of melodrama and violence. That’s why Bandai Namco has initiated a series of adorable story recaps, all done in this retro 8-bit aesthetic. See part one right here:

“Today, we’re going to get everyone caught up on all the drama and twists-and-turns contained within TEKKEN’s long-running storyline through a fun 8-Bit Cinema rendition of TEKKEN’s franchise history covering TEKKEN 1 through TEKKEN 3. Relive Heihachi’s cold-blooded parenting philosophy as he drops his five-year-old son, Kazuya, off a cliff only to have Kazuya survive; awakening an undying need for revenge against his father and his thirst for power to take-over the Mishima Zaibatsu. Learn the origins of Devil Jin (Heihachi’s grandson) and how his storyline plays into TEKKEN lore.”

You can see that Tekken’s Heihachi lives by a very Spartan code of parenting here. If your son isn’t what you hoped he’d be, he’s expendable. Throw him off of a cliff! As it turns out, people don’t like being thrown off of cliffs, and this infanticidal action spawns generations of rivalry which form the basis of the entire Tekken series.

Tekken 7 reminds us that the best fights are always personal, and aims to take the over-the-top storytelling that the series is known for to an all new level when it launches on June 2. We’ll have a full review of the game for you then, so stay tuned to WWG!
